Scarthin Books Sale

Our annual January book sale is now underway and will continue until Sunday 31st January.  Much of our surplus stock has been reduced by over 50%, with 10% off all other new titles and 20% off second hand (sale excludes internet sales and non-book items).

Well stop it or we’ll have you arrested.  Oh, go on then.

Everyone seems to do it – which usually means we refuse to do it – but this time curiosity got the better of us and we just couldn’t resist.  What are we talking about?  A round-up of the year’s biggest hits of course.  The Scarthin Bestsellers List for 2009 reads…

We’re particularly chuffed that one of our own publications – the brilliant photographic walking guide Walk the Peak by Rod Dunn – is the biggest selling non-fiction title of the year, with David being equally chuffed that his Staff Recommendation, Norwegian Wood, comes in at number five on the Best Selling Fiction list.  All titles can be bought in the shop and can be reserved by calling 01629 823272.

In the wake of the Richard & Judy Book Club comes a new TV show (TV Book Club, starting 17th January, More 4) with a regular selection of reading recommendation.

All 10 titles on the list are stocked in the shop.  If you’d like to reserve a copy of any (or all) of the books, you can do so by calling 01629 823272 or by using our online reservation system.

Christmas Displays

Alongside the new display area for our Young Fiction Review Panel in the Children’s Book Room, we have also created space for a selection of Christmas titles plus our annual seasonal recommendations table in the art room.  There are still plenty of shopping days left before the big day – including late night openings on Tuesday 15th & 22nd until 9pm – so please drop by for inspiration.

Book Drum Tournament

Book Drum – a new website from author Hector Macdonald – has pioneered an exciting new approach to reading.  They’re bringing the books we love to life with images, music, maps, video, and all the other riches of the Internet.

To launch Book Drum, they’re holding a Tournament.

They’re looking for writers and editors all over the English-speaking world to help them assemble a collection of Profiles that illustrate and illuminate great books.  They’ll be hiring a few full-time, and commissioning others on a job-by-job basis, recruiting from amongst the best entries to the Book Drum Tournament.
